Ball State Women's Soccer

There are high expectations for a team that has won back-to-back regular season conference championships. However, the team is not picked to win the conference this year, that honor is given to Toledo. That being said the players still believe they are the team to beat and are ready to try and earn a three-peat.

So the Women's Soccer team has started 4-4. That is irrelevant. All that matters is the Mid-American Conference schedule and subsequently the MAC tournament. The team is focused and geared up to not only win the MAC tournament but win a game in the NCAA tournament.

Looking at some of the highlights thus far, the Cardinals beat Loyala in Chicago the week after the Ramblers beat a then number 18 ranked Kansas team. Ball State has talent and can compete with any team in the nation.

The weekend in which the team traveled to Chicago to play Loyola, and then hosted Dayton on the following Sunday was without a doubt the toughest weekend the team will have all season long. Ball State has played quality opponents and should be able to do very well in the MAC.

This is opening weekend for the Cardinals for conference play. They travel to Central Michigan on Friday and then Eastern Michigan on Sunday.

My season prediction: Ball State wins the programs first ever MAC tournament championship and plays tough in the NCAA tournament.

For the upcoming remote, me and James Rider got the chance to create 3 featurettes to be used during our soccer broadcast.

The main idea behind them is that we are showing people some of the more complicated aspects of the game, and demonstrating why the players on the field are doing something special or different. The best part was that Head Soccer Coach Michael Lovett allowed us to used his players in our demonstration. This really helps us show visually want our scenarios really look like during gameplay.

The 3 featurettes include Offsides, Corner Kicks, and Penalty Kicks. James explains how each side (offense and defensive) go into the situation, and what each side wishes to achieve.

I build the front end graphic for them, and it turned out really well. I animated some chalk movement, and added sound effects. The graphic is designed to be adapted for any sport, so hopefully we will use it more in the future.

This past weekend, we broadcasted our first game. As it turned out, we had the opportunity to have in our debut show, the Ball State Women's Soccer Team versus the Bulls of Buffalo University. As always, I love getting to work with the Women's Soccer team.

First of all, Coach Michael Lovett it great to work with. He has been so willing to help us out with anything we ask. Whether it is interviews with players, coaches, or even giving me and James Rider help when we were producing our soccer 101 segments. He let us use the field that they practice on, and allowed us to utilize his players for the segment.

All in all, my experiences with the women's soccer team have been really great.

My hair is now on the line. Coach Lovett has said that if the team wins the rest of their games they will shave my head to match his. I have said that they can shave my head only if the team wins out and wins the MAC Championship.

The team is clicking on all cylinders right now and is very dangerous. This past weekend the team won both games and outscored opponents 7-1 and in their last three games, the Cardinals have outscored their opponents 10-1 which is unheard of in conference play. This is simply one of the most impressive stretches that any team has gone on.

Now one of the toughest tests for the women's team is they must go on the road to face Bowling Green and Toledo. Bowling Green is the team that knocked Ball State out of the MAC tournament last year on penalty kicks. And Toledo is the preseason MAC favorite in the coaches poll and won the MAC championship last season.

The Cardinals are now faced with a very difficult task, the goal for the team, win both matches this weekend.

My package for this week was an Under the Spotlight featuring two members of the Women's Soccer team. Steve and I sat down with them and asked them some questions individually just to see what kind of response we got. The questions ranged from asking them to tell us something not many people know about them, all the way to whether a tomato is a fruit or vegetable (fruit).

The women's soccer team has been mildly disappointing this season. The team is 8-7-1 overall and 4-3-1 in the MAC. The team should have a better record right now. However, the team has won back-to-back MAC championships in the regular season but failed to reach the MAC finals in the tournament both years and in the history of the program.

The team is focused on a MAC tournament championship since day 1 of the season. The road will be a very difficult one for the Cards. If the seedings work out the way I think they will Ball State will have to play the three best teams in MAC other than Ball State. It looks like the opening round could be Bowling Green and then it looks like the second round matchup will be the number one team in the MAC right now, Central Michigan and then the second best team Toledo in the Finals. If Ball State wins a MAC championship this year it will be well deserved.

The soccer cribs package is probably one of the most fun packages i will work on this semester. Those girls are a ton of fun and this is just a way to show different sides of an athlete's life. With a bunch of girls in one house I was thinking it would be nonstop fighting, but it wasn't that way from what I saw. they all get along pretty well and with Jodi Mann living in the same house, I like how the soccer team and the field hockey team support each other by wearing each others jerseys when they have a chance to go to each others games.

There are seven seniors on women’s soccer team and five of them live together. They share a special bond, and out on the field the chemistry that they developed is a result of the close relationship they have together.

In the house six girls live together: soccer players Emily Rein, Annie Aiello, Bailey Decker, Katelyn Alexander and Sarah Shumacker; and field hockey player Jodi Mann. They support one another and when they have time they go to Jodi’s games. She returns the support and attends soccer games dressed as her favorite roommate, number 2 Aiello.

They are constantly playing jokes one and other and the mood of the house is fun and laid back.

It is October and according to Jodi Mann it is officially Scare Month…she has 31 days to scare Annie Aiello. This includes hiding in closets, jumping out behind doors and hiding under Aiello’s bed. Even during the house tour two of Aiello’s roommates hid in one of the rooms and surprised her.

The athletes seem to have a great time together, and want to keep their close friendships after they graduate.

Since I'm essentially probably at the peak of my Ball State soccer knowledge, here are my thoughts on the Ball State women's soccer team:

- Emily Rein's ability to be a game changer is quite impressive. Yesterday in a game against Miami, the Redhawks seemed to have focused a game plan to shutting Emily down that worked rather well. Yet, she still managed to put a header in the back of the net during the second half that saved the Ball State Cardinals season. All around, it's been a joy to watch her during her senior year.

- I think it's a must that Bailey Decker be nicknamed "Shooter Mcgavin". That girl can really put some lasers off of her foot and is not afraid to shoot from anywhere on the field, at anytime at all. Though she wasn't able to put any points on the board yesterday, I can imagine Pace (Miami's goalie) feared her by the end of the day.

- Sarah Schumaker's speed and ability to just flat-out run by defenders while dribbling a soccer ball is really a sight to see. It brings back memories of watching Maurice Acker slice through defenders his freshman year here at Ball State.

- Overall, I felt as if the BSU women's soccer team is more focused then before heading into the MAC tourney, because they now realize how vulnerable they are. I would not be surprised if they made an impressive MAC tourney run.

The women's soccer team won on thursday and is now the 7 seed for the MAC tournament. The team will travel to Central Michigan for the opening round game. I will be there to broadcast the game for WCRD. The team will more than likely have to play in Toledo in the MAC tournament. But first the 2nd seed in the MAC is what the Cardinals will have to take care of.

The team is looking to win its first ever MAC tournament championship and make their first ever MAC final.

The Women's Soccer team won their final regular season game yesterday at home. With that win, they are the 7th seed team in the MAC tournament. If they had lost, they would have needed an Ohio loss to make it into the tournament.
